Om Puri Actor Om Puri was an Indian actor who has appeared in both mainstream Indian films and art films. His credits also include appearances in British and American films. He has received an honorary OBE. Puri was born in Ambala, Haryana. His father worked on the railways and served in the Indian Army. Puri graduated from the Film and Television Institute of India. He is also an alumnus of the 1973 class of National School of Drama where Naseeruddin Shah was a co-student. Puri had worked in numerous Indian films and in many films produced in the United Kingdom and the United States. He made his film debut in the 1976 film Ghashiram Kotwal, based on a Marathi play of the same name. He has claimed that he was paid "peanuts" for his best work. He had collaborated with Amrish Puri as well as Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi and Smita Patil in art films such as Bhavni Bhavai (1980), Sadgati (1981), Ardh Satya (1982), Mirch Masala (1986) and Dharavi (1992). He had been active in cinema. He was critically acclaimed for his performances in many unconventional roles such as a victimized tribal in Aakrosh (1980) (a film in which he spoke only during flash-back sequences); Jimmy's manager in Disco Dancer (1982); a police inspector in Ardh Satya (1982), where he revolts against life-long social, cultural and political persecution and for which he got the National Film Award for Best Actor; the leader of a cell of Sikh militants in Maachis (1996); as a tough cop again in the commercial film Gupt in 1997; and as the courageous father of a martyred soldier in Dhoop (2003). In 1999, Puri acted in a Kannada movie A. K. 47 as a strict police officer who tries to keep the city safe from the underworld - it became a huge commercial hit. Puri's acting in the movie is very memorable. He has rendered his own voice for the Kannada dialogues. In the same year, he starred in the successful British comedy film East is East, where he played a first-generation Pakistani immigrant in the north of England, struggling to come to terms with his far more westernized children. Om Puri had a cameo in the highly acclaimed film Gandhi (1982, directed by Richard Attenborough). In the mid-1990s, he diversified to play character roles in mainstream Hindi cinema, where his roles are more tuned to mass audiences than film critics. He became known internationally by starring in many British films such as My Son the Fanatic (1997), East Is East (1999) and The Parole Officer (2001). He appeared in Hollywood films including City of Joy (1992), opposite Patrick Swayze; Wolf (1994) alongside Jack Nicholson; and The Ghost and the Darkness (1996) opposite Val Kilmer. In 2007, he appeared as General Zia-ul-Haq in Charlie Wilson's War, which stars Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts. He has worked in Hindi television serials like Kakkaji Kaheen (1988) (roughly meaning "Uncle says") as a paan-chewing 'Kakkaji', which was a parody on politicians, and Mr. Yogi (1989) as a suave 'Sutradhaar' who enjoys pulling the protagonist's leg. These two serials underlined Om Puri's versatility as a comedian. He received critical acclaim for him performance in Govind Nihalani's television film Tamas (1987) based on a Hindi novel of the same name. He essayed comic roles in Hindi films like Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro which reached a cult status, followed by Chachi 420 (1997), Hera Pheri (2000), Chor Machaye Shor (2002) and Malamaal Weekly (2006). His more recent Hindi film roles include Singh Is Kinng, Mere Baap Pehle Aap and Billu. Puri was seen in the role of Mohammad Ali Kasuri in Road to Sangam (2009). In 2010, he appeared in The Hangman. In 2011 he was in the Indian action movie Don 2. He had also worked in Aahat TV Series in some episodes during second season which was aired between 2004-2005 on Sony channel. More.

Gul Makai Times Of India's Rating 1. 5/5 avg. users' rating 3. 6/5 Rate Movie Cast: Reem Shaikh, Atul Kulkarni, Divya Dutta, Om Puri, Mukesh Rishi, Abhimanyu Singh Direction: H. E. Amjad Khan Genre: Drama Duration: 2 hours 10 minutes Gul Makai Movie Review Filmfare Times Of India critic's rating: 2. 0/5 Nobel prize winner Malala Yousafzai -- at 14 she was she was the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize -- survived an attack on her life and emerged as a stronger voice of dissent against the forces of Taliban. The Swat Valley in North-Western Pakistan where she lived was totally under the yoke of the Taliban who were dead against a secular education for girls. Malala blogged for the BBC Urdu service under the pseudonym Gul Makai, the name of a heroine from a Pashtun folk tale. In 2012 a militant boarded her school bus and opened fire, wounding her as well as two of her friends. She was taken to a military hospital and was later flown to Birmingham for further treatment. The timely action saved her life. Hers is an inspiring life indeed and kudos to director H. Amjad Khan for attempting to showcase it. His heart certainly was in the right place when he started the project. It went through a severe development hell and took many years in the making and as a result the end product is a disjointed piece of work. Attention to detail was sorely missing. For instance, in a scene where textbooks were being burnt by the militants one could see that they were of Navneet Publications. How hard was it to acquire some genuine Pakistani textbooks? Some characters speak with a distinct Marathi accent and even look like they belong to Maharashtra police rather than being members of the Pakistani army. Instead of making a film about a sensitive girl the director has chosen to give it a masala potboiler treatment. The terrorists lurk around carrying huge guns like B movie villains killing anyone they dislike on a whim. And the whole counter strike by the Pakistani army gets so much glorification that you feel like you're watching a war film. It's Uri part two but with Pak army as the hero. We're sure that wasn't the director's intention. After you get over the shock of inadvertently watching a war film under the guise of watching a Nobel Laureate's biopic, you spare a thought towards Atul Kulkarni and Divya Dutta, two eternally professional actors having the ability to rise above insipid scripts. They play Malala's father and mother and have given the film everything they have got and more. The scene where they break down hearing news of an attack on her gets to you. Newcomer Reem Shaikh tries hard to become Malala but the effort shows. There is a clip from a speech by the real Malala at the end credits which offers more impact about education of girls worldwide than this two hour film because it showed a person's burning desire to bring about a change. Sadly that intensity was absent in this popcorn version of events. Trailer: Gul Makai Pallabi Dey Purkayastha, January 31, 2020, 12:14 AM IST STORY: ‘Gul Makai’ chronicles the life and struggles of Pakistani Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai, leading up to her notorious shooting in the hands of Taliban on October 9, 2012. REVIEW: Born in a small hamlet named Mingora, near the beautiful Swat valley of Pakistan, Malala Yousafzai (Reem Shaikh) has been academically inclined from a tender age. But, despite her father Ziauddin Yousafzai’s (Atul Kulkarni) unwavering faith in her and his community, their world comes crumbling down when the anti-education extremist group, Taliban, hijacks their otherwise peaceful valley and puts an indefinite ban on education for the girl child. The mood of ‘Gul Makai’ is focused on the brutality that the local town-dwellers were subjected to during the Taliban occupation of Swat. Its tonality emphasises on one little girl’s unabashed and unquenchable thirst to acquire knowledge – not just for her own sake, but for every other girl child around her. True, the subject of this biographical piece is fascinating but, H. E Amjad Khan’s approach towards the same does not translate onto the big screen. For one, the narrative is messy from the word go and although Khan tries to juxtaposition Malala’s inner turmoil with the war waged by the Talibans, he ends up concocting a story that is half-baked, and riddled with glaring flaws and discrepancies. And, barring seasoned actors Atul Kulkarni and Divya Dutta, the star cast (including the protagonist) has failed to deliver believable performances. In fact, Reem’s version of Malala neither renders a cathartic experience for its viewers, nor does it evoke any sense of real emotions. Also, the background score is a replica of the 80s war films in a not-so-flattering way and the haphazard writing goes on for 132 minutes, making ‘Gul Makai’ a tedious watch. It is quite disappointing that the film does not mention any of the controversies Malala has courted along the way, which is hard to overlook given the fact that the film is biographical in nature. ‘Gul Makai’ could have been a very strong story, but the initial spark fizzles out when translated on screen; the takeaway here is close to nothing.

When Swat Valley was seized by Taliban gunmen in 2009 and Sharia law was imposed upon its people, Malala spoke out for the rights of girls, especially the right to receive a complete education. She started blogging on the BBC Urdu website under the pseudonym Gul Makai, against the oppression faced by them in the Swat Valley. As she continued her activism, gaining worldwide recognition and support, she was hunted down and shot by a Taliban gunman as part of the organization’s violent opposition to girls’ education. ‘Gul Makai’ is about the early life of Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai. The film revolves around how she, along with her father, raised a voice against the oppression of the Taliban terrorist regime in the Swat Valley in Pakistan. What led to Malala getting shot by the terror group? Well, that’s what the movie is all about. What’s Hot Atul Kulkarni. He is the lone warrior in the film. He is as usual in his element where he looks apt in the character of the activist, Ziauddin Yousafzai. Whenever he enters the scene, he makes sure that the screens are lit up. His screen presence is so strong that you will be left gasping as to how his brilliant portrayal is going down the drain in this film. What’s Not Pretty much everything else in the movie is not even worth a mention. Still… Tik Tok superstar Reem Shaikh has been wasted in the lead role. She does a lot more emoting in her viral videos than she has done in ‘Gul Makai’. She is new, and so maybe she was working under the strict instructions of the makers of the movie to not go overboard and give her special quirky tadka to the character. Same goes for Divya Dutta. Maybe she was just too swayed away by wanting to work in the Malala Yousafzai biopic that she even agreed to a part which was much below her stature. However, she did the best yet, the abrupt screenplay just didn’t allow her to perform to her full potential. Stellar screen actors like Pankaj Tripathi, Sharib Hashmi, Arif Zakaria, Mukesh Rishi, Abhimanyu Singh, Kamlesh Gill and the late Om Puri have been totally wasted. I can’t believe most of these actors have just blink-and-miss roles, which could have been developed properly to be a full-fledged character. Sad! The screenplay by Bhaswati Chakrabarty is so abrupt that at times you will be left wondering as to what is actually happening. To add to it, you have director HE Amjad Khan’s direction which can be termed as nothing but amateurish. For example, the whole reaction shot of Malala (Reem Shaikh) and the other girls in the school bus when the terrorist open-fires at Malala, has not been shown at all. The camera stays focused on the face of the terrorist (Sharib Hashmi). It’s pathetic! The two have squandered the opportunity to make a brilliant film on a very brilliant topic on one of the most popular individuals in the world. The work looks so amateurish that at times you are left wondering whether they made the whole film on a shoestring budget, as the production quality seems terrible. The film needed a better screenplay and direction. Probably, a Meghna Gulzar would have done proper justice to this intense and intricately layered story of Malala Yousafzai. To be fair, as a Malala fan, you want to know about the work that she has done, the reason why she got a Nobel Peace Prize, the immense amount of charity and women empowerment work she does all over. You do want to know about how she grew up and what led to her getting shot, but you want to see that 40 per cent and want to see the rest 60 per cent about her work. This film looks more like a biopic on Malala’s dad, Ziauddin Yousafzai. Amjad Khan decided to give the music for the film himself, which didn’t leave any extra impact on the audiences watching the movie. Amar Mohile’s background score was slightly better, but some seriously chirpy editing by Praveen Angre make that also not stand out. The film could have easily been cut short by another 15 minutes to save the people of the pain. The least of my favourites in the film would be the cinematography and camera work. What were Madhu Rao and Javed Ethesham thinking? The weird angles on which shots have been taken, and add to that the fast-paced takes used during the gun-fight sequences make you have a splitting headache when you’re coming out of the movie. To add to that, there are the bad VFX scenes where helicopters, tanks, buses or even people are getting blasted. Even a porn film has better VFX than what we were subjected to in ‘Gul Makai’. Overall, you’ll be left pulling your hair out. Verdict AVOID! If you’re really interested in watching the story of Malala, check out the 2015 documentary by Davis Guggenheim titled, ‘He Named Me Malala’. ‘Gul Makai’ is just a great story left squandered by some novice direction and screenplay. Sadly, a Meghna Gulzar would have given this movie the proper justice it demanded. I am going with just 1 star for ‘Gul Makai’. Box-Office Considering the 6-7 years of delay in the movie being released to the fact that it had the least of promotions, it will be a miracle if the movie is still in theatres by Monday. The clash with ‘Jawaani Jaaneman’ is surely not going to help the movie any bit, as that will eat up into the whole business.
